A DC UPS is designed to provide backup power when the main power source becomes unavailable.
Under normal conditions, the DC UPS receives power from an AC adapter or another DC power source. It regulates the input power, supplies the required DC voltage to connected devices, and charges its internal battery.
When the input power fails or falls outside the acceptable range, the internal control circuit detects the abnormal condition and activates the battery backup path.
The battery then supplies power to the output circuit, allowing connected devices to continue operating.
The automatic switching process can be explained in three stages:
Step 1: Normal Power Supply
The DC UPS receives external power and supplies stable DC output to connected devices. Meanwhile, the built-in battery is charged and maintained.
Step 2: Power Failure Detection
When the input power is interrupted or becomes abnormal, the control circuit detects the change and activates the battery power supply.
Step 3: Battery Backup Operation
The battery takes over the power supply through the internal power management circuit. The DC UPS continues delivering the required output voltage to connected equipment.
This automatic process helps reduce power interruptions and prevents connected devices from unexpectedly shutting down.
Switching time refers to the interval required for a UPS to transfer its output from the normal power source to battery power.
For sensitive electronic devices, even a brief interruption may cause a restart or temporary loss of connection.
A DC UPS with a fast switching design helps minimize this interruption, making it particularly useful for:
WiFi routers and modems
ONU and ONT fiber optic devices
CCTV surveillance systems
Network switches
Access control systems
However, the actual switching time depends on the DC UPS circuit design and the power requirements of the connected equipment. Some devices also have internal capacitors that can temporarily maintain operation during a short power interruption.
When the external power supply returns to normal, the DC UPS detects the recovery and switches back to its normal operating mode.
The external power source resumes supplying the connected devices, while the internal charging circuit recharges the battery.
This allows the DC UPS to prepare for the next unexpected power interruption without requiring manual intervention.
For network equipment, an unexpected power interruption can affect more than just the power supply.
WiFi Routers: Help maintain internet connectivity during power interruptions.
ONU/ONT Devices: Help keep fiber optic network connections running.
CCTV Systems: Help maintain surveillance operations when the main power supply fails.
Network Switches: Help reduce unexpected network disconnections.
By automatically switching to battery power, a DC UPS provides an additional layer of power protection for essential low-voltage equipment.
Not all DC UPS products have the same switching performance. Before choosing a suitable solution, consider the following factors:
Switching Time: Check the specified transfer time to ensure compatibility with your equipment.
Output Voltage: Make sure the DC UPS matches the required voltage, such as 5V, 9V or 12V.
Output Current: Ensure the UPS can support the connected device's current requirements.
Battery Capacity: Choose an appropriate battery capacity based on the expected backup runtime.
Protection Functions: Look for overcharge, over-discharge, overload, overcurrent and short-circuit protection.
Automatic power switching is one of the key functions that makes a DC UPS a practical backup power solution.
By detecting input power failures and automatically activating battery backup, a DC UPS helps reduce unexpected interruptions and keeps essential electronic devices operating.
At GIDEON, we focus on developing and manufacturing reliable UPS power solutions, including DC UPS products designed for routers, modems, fiber optic equipment and other low-voltage applications.
