When the power goes out, keeping your Wi-Fi connection online can be more important than simply keeping the lights on.

A router, modem, ONU/ONT, or gateway can shut down immediately when mains power is interrupted. For homes, offices, CCTV systems, and network-connected devices, even a short interruption can cause loss of connectivity.

So, how long can a DC UPS power your router?

The answer depends mainly on the battery energy, DC UPS efficiency, and the actual power consumption of the connected device.

How to Calculate DC UPS Backup Time

A simple way to estimate backup time is:

Backup Time ≈ Battery Energy (Wh) × Efficiency ÷ Load Power (W)

Battery energy can be calculated as:

Battery Energy (Wh) = Battery Voltage (V) × Battery Capacity (Ah)

For example, if a DC UPS uses a 12V 5Ah battery:

12V × 5Ah = 60Wh

Assuming the DC UPS operates at approximately 85% efficiency, the usable energy would be:

60Wh × 85% = 51Wh

If the connected router consumes 10W:

51Wh ÷ 10W ≈ 5.1 hours

This means the theoretical backup time could be around 5 hours under these conditions.

However, actual runtime may be shorter because of battery condition, temperature, conversion losses, aging, and changes in the device's power consumption.

Why Router Power Consumption Matters

Two routers may have very different power requirements.

A basic home router may consume only a few watts, while a more powerful gateway, modem, Wi-Fi system, or network device may require significantly more power.

For example:

Load Power

12V 5Ah Battery

Approx. Backup Time*

60Wh

10.2 hours

10W

5.1 hours

15W

60Wh

3.4 hours

20W

60Wh

2.55 hours

*Estimated using 85% efficiency. Actual runtime may vary.

This also explains why battery capacity alone does not determine backup time.

A larger battery can provide more energy, but a higher-power load will consume that energy faster.

What Can a DC UPS Power During an Outage?

A DC UPS is designed for low-voltage electronic equipment that requires stable DC power.

Depending on the model, it can provide backup power for devices such as:

  • Wi-Fi routers

  • Modems

  • ONU/ONT devices

  • Network gateways

  • CCTV cameras

  • Access control systems

  • PoE devices

  • Other low-voltage networking equipment

For example, a multi-output DC UPS may support different voltage requirements such as 5V, 9V, 12V, 15V, 24V or 48V, depending on the product configuration.

Before connecting a device, the output voltage, current, connector type, and polarity should always be checked to ensure compatibility.

Does a Higher-Capacity DC UPS Always Mean Longer Backup?

Not necessarily.

Backup time depends on the relationship between available battery energy and actual load power.

For example:

  • A 10W router consumes relatively little power.

  • A 20W network device consumes approximately twice as much power.

  • If both use the same battery, the 20W device will generally have a shorter backup time.

This is why choosing a DC UPS based only on battery capacity can lead to unrealistic expectations.

The better approach is to consider:

Battery capacity + efficiency + actual device power consumption + required backup time

How Can You Get Longer Backup Time?

If a network device needs to remain online for several hours, there are several factors to consider.

1. Choose the right battery capacity

A higher battery capacity generally provides more available energy.

2. Check the actual power consumption

Use the device's rated power or measure its actual consumption when possible.

3. Consider conversion efficiency

Energy is lost during voltage conversion and other internal operations. Therefore, usable energy is lower than the battery's nominal energy.

4. Match the DC UPS output to the device

The output voltage and current must meet the requirements of the router, modem, ONU/ONT, or other connected equipment.

5. Consider the required backup time

A user who needs 30 minutes of backup power will have different requirements from someone who needs 4–6 hours.

DC UPS vs. Power Bank for a Router

A DC UPS is designed specifically for continuous power backup.

When mains power is available, the unit can charge its internal battery while supplying power to the connected device. When an outage occurs, it can automatically switch to battery power.

This automatic backup function can help reduce interruptions to connected equipment.

A standard power bank, on the other hand, may require manual connection or switching and is not necessarily designed for continuous operation with a router.

For applications where network availability is important, a purpose-built DC UPS can provide a more convenient backup solution.

What Should You Check Before Buying a DC UPS?

Before selecting a DC UPS for a router or network device, check these specifications:

1. Device voltage:
For example, 5V, 9V or 12V.

2. Device power consumption:
For example, 10W or 15W.

3. Battery capacity:
Measured in Ah or Wh.

4. DC UPS efficiency:
Higher efficiency generally means more usable battery energy.

5. Output connector and polarity:
The connector must be compatible with the device.

6. Required backup time:
Determine how long the equipment needs to remain operational during an outage.

A Simple Way to Estimate Your Backup Time

If you already know your router's power consumption, you can make a quick estimate.

For example:

Battery: 12V × 5Ah
Battery Energy: 60Wh
Efficiency: 85%
Router Load: 10W

Calculation:

60Wh × 85% ÷ 10W ≈ 5.1 hours

If the router consumes 15W:

60Wh × 85% ÷ 15W ≈ 3.4 hours

If the router consumes 20W:

60Wh × 85% ÷ 20W ≈ 2.55 hours

The actual runtime should always be confirmed through product testing because real-world performance can vary.

Keep Your Network Online When the Power Goes Out

A power outage does not always need to mean an immediate loss of connectivity.

For routers, modems, ONU/ONT devices, CCTV systems, and other low-voltage equipment, a properly selected DC UPS can provide automatic backup power and help maintain operation during short or extended power interruptions.

The key is not simply choosing the largest battery.

It is about choosing the right DC UPS for the device's voltage, power consumption, and required backup time.
